Origins
The "Cendana" or "Cendana Wangi" is an Indonesian word which means sandalwood. The sandalwood is a distinctive and luxuriant tree that produces a special kind of fragrance from its wood, which is often used for spices, incense, aroma-therapy, perfumes and fragrances. The timber from this magnificent tree can preserve its aroma for centuries. The sandalwood (Santalum Album) can fetch a very dear price.
In the customary beliefs of some eastern countries, sandalwood is perceived as an alternative form of medication to bring man closer to the Almighty. In Bali, the wood from the sandalwood tree is often hand-crafted into high quality sculptures and figurines. It is also used in ceremonial offerings and traditional treatments.
The extract from sandalwood can be incredibly expensive in its purest form; it is mainly used in ayurvedic healing to eliminate anxiety.
